Course Content
Students study 3 units:-
Unit 1: Meeting the nutritional needs of specific groups.
Unit 2: Ensuring food is safe to eat.
Either
Unit 3: Experimenting to solve food production
Or
Unit 4: Current issues in food science and nutrition.
Overview
The WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Food Science & Nutrition has been designed to provide learners with knowledge, understanding and skills to progress to further study and training. It offers exciting and interesting experiences through the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in purposeful contexts linked to the food industry.
 Expectations
Students should have a keen interest in food; ideally with some background knowledge and understanding of how ingredients work and why.
They should be able to solve problems and have an enquiring mind for research and practical food work.
Students should understand that there are internal and external assessments.
Future Pathway
Food Science & Nutrition complements A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Business and Maths; students can progress to higher education degrees: BSc Food & Nutrition, BSc Human Nutrition, BSc Public Health Nutrition, BSc Food Science & Technology, as well as a range of other vocational courses, e.g. Hospitality.
Key Skills
Students will need the following skills:
Independent learning
Transferable skills, such as, problem solving, research, mathematical and practical food tasks
Ability to complete project-based research, development and presentations
Use ICT for completion of many tasks/projects
Ability to work in a professional environment
Recommended Entry Requirements
Grade 5 or above in GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition, English, Maths and Science.
