The Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum
Learning a foreign language is an excellent way to extend our horizons and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.
During KS2, we teach Spanish for half the year and French for the other half (in Y2/3 and 5 this is French then Spanish, in Year 4 and 6 it is Spanish then French). The teaching focuses on speaking and listening at the beginning of the Key Stage; written language skills are developed in Year 5 and 6, with more attention to the working of the language and grammatical structures. Language learning at KS2 aims to foster enthusiasm, appreciation of different cultures, confidence and basic knowledge of the language as a foundation for study in KS3.
Our teaching aims to enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes (through penpal letters and imaginary shopping lists for example), learn new ways of thinking, and read great literature in the original language. We aim to provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
