I began to notice the background noise of shouting, almost riot-like, when my daydreaming came to a brief end and I took a seat in a faux leather armchair opposite his office desk, which was piled with files and paperwork. “Excuse the mess,” he whispered, with a hint of laughter to his tone of voice. “Not at all” I replied, pushing past it. “It’s so lovely to see you, Miss Williams. You know, I have always been an enthusiast of your work.” My mind overflowed with joy and I replied thankfully, “For me just as much you, Doctor. I have always been drawn to this facility.” To which he answered with great gratitude.
I began asking questions and noting down key information that surfaced in our conversation, such as details on the care provided to patients admitted here, as my memory would never carry all of this information.
A sudden shriek circulated around the building and echoed in my ears. In the cabinet before me appeared a tall, dark shadow, who appeared to be clutching a bronze key in their left hand. I then cautiously turned my head to reveal a patient who had somehow escaped from their quarters. Footsteps gradually became more evident and patients were flooding down the stairs like water. My heart filled with fear and I struggled to think of what I could do. Nothing. There was nothing I could do. At this point, danger was inevitable. I began to think Dr Hayes’ attempt to secretly communicate to the security guards had failed, this was until the facility fell into lockdown. From then onwards the entire occurrence became a blur. It was like my mind had left my body and left me speechless, the memory of this had faded from my mind and I can partially remember calling a taxi in a panic and, the next thing I knew, I was being driven back down the long gravel drive, through the barriers and away to safety. I wouldn’t wish an experience such as this upon my worst enemy, it was a truly shaking event to have happened.
Since the incident, there has been major safety checks at Bradcliff to ensure the safety of all patients and staff, even the people who live in the local areas surrounding the institution. New wards have been created and many more staff have been employed to sustain a happy and safe environment for all.
