The mangle of ethnographic performance
We are a couple of months out from performing at an international social sciences conference, where we have been accepted to perform a 15-20 minute work-in-progress showing of
(then titled) Corporeal Translations. The conference call for papers had invited performative articulations of research, so I had assumed there was some support for performance-led research. The following abridged email exchange between the conference organizer (let’s call her Abby) the conference chair (let’s call him Mike) and myself (Alys) reflects a clear example of mistranslation and misunderstanding that had enormous impact in developing the technical set-up, movement vocabulary, and dramaturgy of Radio Strainer.
