silent, as though she were trying to gauge my authenticity. At that moment, she received a text: WARRANT ISSUED.
It was as though a dam opened that had been holding back police officers as they burst in and began to disperse like ants on a countertop of spilled sugar. Two went upstairs, one into the kitchen, one took the bedroom downstairs and one dutiful officer stayed to verify search warrant parameters with Detective Fitzgerald. From what I overhead, nothing was off limits.
We danced around her questions designed to confuse any suspect. Everyone is a suspect in the initial leg of a crime investigation, and I was prepared for that. I knew they’d make their way to Brian with evidence, though some circumstantial, that could never be denied. At that point, Brian entered the condo apparently having forgotten a file he’d taken home the night before. Laughing to myself, I thought how behind the times their law firm was to still be utilizing physical file folders. Our firm was 100% digital and secure, as it should be.
They immediately took Brian into custody without incident, having probable cause. I watched as the detective’s cohorts searched him and began to seize more evidence from his room. I’ll never forget that frightened look on his face. The thoughts that must have raced through his mind at that moment would frighten any man who already knew the fate that awaited him behind bars. I knew he felt the pain as the familiar words rang in his ears: You have the right to remain silent and to refuse to answer questions. Anything you say may be used against you in a court of law...
