DAY ELEVEN
Alone with my own thoughts and the remnants of my conscience, I awoke in my clothes including my shoes. The shock of Rachel’s news had my head spinning. Was she telling the truth or was this just a ploy to gain my sympathy to save her life? She’d been with me ten days, so it was possible she was pregnant upon her arrival, without her knowledge. But then again, the stress that this encounter brought into her life could easily be the reason for a late period.
I had to know for sure, whatever my inevitable “conversation” with Karina would bring, I had to be certain because everything hinged on the truth. If she were pregnant, it would change every piece of the puzzle. I would hope to remain absolute and have no qualms about bringing my schematic to fruition, even under the circumstances. Perhaps if it were true, it would bring me even more satisfaction. Double the pleasure, double the fun. I shook my head in appreciation of my own twisted humor. Regardless, this latest development threw everything off kilter. I had to go to the store and buy a test.
I put on a dark pair of sunglasses and drove to the farthest drug store. I would make this a quick stop, in and out in ten minutes. I walked into the store and grabbed the first pregnancy kit I saw on the shelf. After all, I wasn’t going to stand there and compare sticks and prices. They all had the same objective. I brought it to the counter with my head hung low. “Good afternoon,” the clerk uttered. “Just ring me up,” I answered slamming the door to any pleasantries immediately.
He put the box in a small white bag as I turned quickly to exit the store, practically knocking KJ to the ground.
