After an awkward silence, his new life companion offered up a piece of information, his name. William Hicks. William was convicted of grand larceny for stealing a car and possession of both an unlicensed firearm and about 8 ounces of cocaine, which is a Class A-1 felony in New York. William, who Brian quickly learned had a particular aversion to being called “Bill,” was facing many years. After introductions, the conversation slowly morphed into silence. Brian went back to staring at the gray surroundings. He wondered how Laura would find out. He’d been given the opportunity to call her, but passed. He knew he couldn’t bear to hear her cry. He put off notifying her as long as he could, though he knew that no contact from him would only make her worry more.
