inconspicuously bringing back, at regular intervals, little rocks— just as she had watched Tucker do repeatedly on a larger scale through the years. Each of her small prizes was bigger than a pebble, yet smaller than a baby’s fist . . . just big enough to fit in her mouth and not too heavy for her to transport through the yard and up the stairs.
I used to find those small rocks on the floor throughout my home. They were in my bathroom. They were in my living room. They were here in my office. I began to consider them small, yet significant, strategically placed reminders that I should follow Lilly’s example and take life in small portions. I have learned that I can meet problems and dilemmas head on, even if they appear to me in the size of boulders, if I remember not to bite off more than I can chew at one time. I have learned to learn: I have learned to learn my limitations and to accept my life’s troubles in Lilly- rock sizes and stop trying to take them on all at once.
There is a quote I’ve often referred to in my speeches and stories: “Life is hard . . . yard by yard. Inch by inch? It’s a cinch!” Now, I have rewritten that concept as I continually tell myself and others to “Take life in Lilly rocks . . . ” When life presents itself to you in boulders, take it piece by piece. Focus primarily on what you can do presently and not everything else that will follow. Consider each task as a whole component, rather than a part of the total product. In this way, you are able to accomplish small goals regularly in pursuit of the larger one, building confidence and inspiring perseverance.
