Rosebush
It’s our first year without you, but I clipped a rose anyway, and I brought it to your room the way I would on Mother’s Day.
I placed it in an Irish vase, and set it near the bed
so the aroma would reach the place where you once laid your head.
But, as I cut the rose so beautiful, reaching out on bended knee,
I couldn’t help but notice
at least nine more that I could see.
My heart began to realize
what was followed by my tears,
that this bush had never bloomed so well in its entire thirteen years.
The pain of loss is still so deep that I choose to believe this is a sign from my mother on Mother’s Day
that, in time, I will be fine.
