Never Lost
There are pictures on the mantel of my mother’s smiling eyes. And another of my father,
so beguiling and so wise.
We cried for certain lengths of time, and then our lives moved on. Just as they will surely do when my own presence is gone.
I used to say: I “lost” someone, when I was under grief’s control. Then one day a sharp awakening pierced my mind and soul.
A moment’s clear awareness removed my grief and sorrow. Not a mournful tear has fallen since. Nor will any fall, tomorrow.
The pain of “loss” had me doubting if their love was worth the cost until a search inside my heart revealed that they were never “lost.”
All that binds two lives together doesn’t fade when someone dies. It stays alive inside of us. Death only severs earthly ties.
It completes a life’s journey with one important exception: it only briefly disconnects their physical connection.
