Tolerance
We all have limits to that which we can accept before necessitating a response. The art of being tolerant requires learning how to voluntarily push beyond those limits without feeling a need to respond.
If we were all born with a tolerance gene, hatred and prejudice would dissipate as fast as respect would rise. The practice of tolerance can ease anger, impatience, and frustration. It can be the tool you learn to rely upon most to help you stop wasting precious time on the minor, petty things in life.
Tolerance involves granting everyone the benefit of the doubt and being anti-reactionary. When you practice tolerance, the discourteous drivers, the medicine bottles that are difficult to open, the elusive parking spot, will begin to represent less importance in your dash. It will soon appear to you that your life is running more smoothly, more peacefully, though it is not life that has changed, but you.
Tolerance is patience. Tolerance is acceptance. Tolerance is belief in the reality that you don’t always have to be right. The only practical, healthy strategy is to learn to accept and respect others’ viewpoints and beliefs. When you see things differently than others, you must respect that their views are founded from their own experiences, realities, and consciences.
Remaining firm in your own convictions doesn’t mean disrespect must permeate the process. Once you swap the desire to impose your opinions with the act of acceptance, the door to tolerance remains open.
We are all born astonishingly imperfect with countless flaws and deficiencies. No one is birthed with a gavel in their hand and immediately granted the right to judge others.
