Thirteen Summers
I read something lately
that proved quite effective
in awakening my soul
and putting things in perspective.
The words that I studied with statistics and reasons likened the span of a lifetime to seventy-five seasons.
Although that’s just an average --
a prediction and a guess,
for no one knows who gets more springtimes and no one knows who gets less,
I performed the equation,
with my age calculated,
and found I’ve thirteen summers left by what they’ve estimated.
And while memories began to flow from the summers I’ve amassed, I felt a profound longing
for the one that had just passed.
For I didn’t live it to the fullest, or make it one I will remember, and now it’s gone forever for it’s the end of September.
I am feeling somewhat cheated
as though time committed a theft
as I grieve the passing of last summer... one of thirteen I may have left.
