spoken. His assets were his legacy, left behind and divided among an eager and receptive group of distant relatives.
For two years, his wishes were fulfilled. His body spent this time away from others, just as he had planned. But, as progress would have it, the county decided to build a three-lane highway heading southeast of the cemetery. The owners of the cemetery had reached financial hardships and were eager to negotiate. They bargained every piece of unused land out to the very border of their property. The county was permitted an easement of twenty feet from the last grave site. The project took months to complete. Heavy machinery, smoke, dust, and noise extinguished the silence and serenity surrounding the area he had chosen for his shell to spend eternity.
Today, the invisible fence he had attempted to construct around his gravestone cannot block the dirt and pebbles ricocheting off cars and trucks as they travel down this busy road. Now considered an icon for loneliness, each passerby has a clear view of his bland gray headstone as they speed by enroute to their destinations. Many of them wonder, as I do, about the headstone, standing alone in such close proximity to the roadway.
We cannot separate ourselves from the rest of the world, because we are each a part of everything. We are connected through the air we breathe, the ground upon which we walk and everything our senses absorb. We are never alone, neither are we designed to be. We are meant to be a part of everything, and everything, a part of us. We are intended to leave footprints on this earth and fingerprints on the lives we touch.
