FINAL DESTINATION
“Well...,” Neil said, “this is my mother.”
The deputy let out an exasperated sigh. “I got a call that somebody was dumping a body out here. Would that be you?”
“It’s just her ashes,” Neil said.
“That don’t matter," the deputy scolded. “It's still unlawful disposal of human remains.” He opened the back door of the vehicle. “Get in.”
Neil hobbled over and climbed in. The deputy closed the door and turned his attention back to Henderson.
“If you want to file charges against him for trespassing, you can come down to the station. But I’ll tell you, the sheriff is a more curious man than myself. He just might want to know what you are so gung-ho about protecting out here. So keep that in mind.”
The deputy got in, put the vehicle in reverse and backed out the gate. Neil watched out the windshield as the farmer still glared at him. They pulled out another gate onto a dirt road that led to the highway.
“You look like you have had a really bad day,” the Deputy said.
“Never worse.”
"I don't suppose you would like to tell me what is in that house."
"Uh..."
"Never mind," the deputy said. "If you told me something everybody knows already it would lead to a lot a paperwork and me getting home late." The deputy pointed as they neared the rental car. “Is that your car?”
“Yes.”
The SUV pulled onto the shoulder in front of the car. The deputy got out and open the door for Neil.
“You’re not arresting me?”
“You didn’t actually dump the ashes, and I don’t think attempted unlawful disposal of human remains is on the
