FINAL DESTINATION
The driver contemplated that for a moment before saying, "Oh," and nodding his head.
"Sorry to hear of your mama's passing," the smaller man said with sincerity. There was a long awkward moment of silence before the smaller man spoke again. "So what ya got in the box?"
"Leon," the driver shouted. "Mind your own business." The driver sat back and looked like he would give his brother another swat on the arm, but Leon put up his hands in defense this time.
"Don't you go hitting me, Jacob," Leon said. Jacob raised his hand threatening a blow until Leon said, "I'll tell Momma you’re being mean.” The taller man let his hand drop and regarded his brother with irritation.
Leon leaned out the window of the truck. "I apologize if I gave any offense."
"None taken," Neil said. He expected them to say goodbye and pull away at that point. Both of them continued to stare at him, or rather they seemed to stare at the box. He decided they were not going to leave until their curiosity was satisfied. "My mother wanted me to bring her back to where she grew up."
Rather than relieving their curiosity a look of confusion moved across both their faces. Leon cocked his head a little to one side and said, "You mean you got your dead mama in that box?"
"Well...her ashes," Neil said. "She wanted to have them brought back to the farm where she grew up."
The two men looked at one another and then back at Neil. It seemed as silly to him as it must to the two brothers, but he had promised he would do this for her. He may not have been the best son. He had not always kept his promises to her, but this last one he was determined to keep.
Jacob pulled the greasy cap from his head and scratched at his dirty blond hair. "Might be none of our business mister, but
