17. Student Grants

SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland)
• Applicable to people with status (stamp 4*)
• This is the student grant scheme available to Irish students as well as international
protection applicants who have received their refugee status, subsidiary protection or
permission to remain.
• Applicable to PLC, Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees
• * Not all stamp 4 permissions are eligible, please check the SUSI Nationality Criteria for
details of precisely which stamp 4 is acceptable
• You must reside in Ireland for 3 of the last 5 years before the start date of your course
• You must apply to an approved course at an approved college
• You must be progressing in your education (see NFQ on page 4/5)

• Your Income must fall below specified thresholds
• Provides for PLC maintenance but not PLC fees
• Provides for Undergraduate maintenance and fees
• Provides for Postgraduate maintenance and fees in some cases
• Provides for full-time study only
• Open now for renewal applications, apply before 10th June for priority processing
• Open now for first time applicants, apply before 8th July for priority processing
• Please note that you can apply for SUSI maintenance or BTEA but not both. Usually, BTEA is
financially a better option – either way apply to SUSI for your fees.

Student Support Scheme
• Applicable to people who are currently international protection applicants
• This is a student grant similar to the SUSI grant except it is for people who are International
Protection Applicants
• Applicable to PLC and Undergraduate degrees
• You need to be a Protection Applicant but not have a Deportation Order
• You need to be in the protection process for 3 years or more on 31st August 2021
• You must have been accepted on an approved PLC or undergraduate course
• People with Leaving Cert or QQI Level 5 Qualification or Mature Students may apply
• Apply for entry to your course through CAO before 01 February for all undergraduate
courses – in some cases you can apply before 1st May.
• You must be progressing in your education (see NFQ on page 4/5)
