3. NARIC
(how to have your previous qualifications recognised)
NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) provides advice on the academic recognition of a foreign qualification by comparing it, where possible, to a major award type and level on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) – see page 4 for more about NFQ.
• Generally NARIC can only provide comparability statements for wholly completed qualifications. See www.naric.ie for further details. Short video explainer here.
• On that website you can search for your country and different types of qualifications and hopefully you will find what level your qualification equals in Ireland.
• It is important to know that if you have a degree from another country it is not possible to receive state funding in Ireland for a 2nd degree. Nobody can receive funding for a 2nd degree, not even Irish citizens.
• Please do not hesitate to contact NARIC if you have any questions regarding your previous education, they are very helpful.
4. How to Start you Education Journey in Ireland
•
• You can easily find the email and phone number of your local Education Guidance Counsellor by clicking on the map below.
• Remember too that your children in secondary schools have access to the school guidance counsellor to help them plan their education after the Leaving Certificate
• You can also search for courses here at Careers Portal. This allows you to search for courses based on level, area of interest and near where you live.
The best piece of information we can give you is to find your local Education Guidance Counsellor
and have a chat about what you want to do. This is a free and confidential service. They will provide
impartial careers and education information, one-to-one guidance and group guidance, which help
people to make informed educational, career and life choices. It is really important that you start off
on the right road.
This Information and Guidance Service is provided to adults aged 18 years and over, and
those over 16 who have left school early but who are interested in returning to education.
