Diabetes Testing Basics
Perhaps the most important aspect of good diabetes management is keeping track of blood glucose (sugar) levels with regularly scheduled testing and understanding what your test results mean.
Blood Glucose Monitor
When you test, your monitor shows a number followed by mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or mmol/L (millimole
per liter), which tells you how much blood glucose is in your bloodstream. This number changes throughout the day based on a number of factors, including food, sleep and exercise.
Your doctor will set your target ranges and tell you the best times to test. If your levels are higher (hyperglycemia) or lower (hypoglycemia) than
your target ranges on a consistent basis, tell your doctor immediately; you may need to adjust your diabetes management plan to help prevent long-term complications.
A typical 90-day Testing Supplies order includes:
• Test Strips • Lancets/Lancet Device • Control Solution • Prep Wipes
Test Strips
Used to insert a blood sample into a blood glucose monitor. Packaged as individual strips or in multi- strip drums or discs. Each box of test strips matches a particular monitor.
Control Solution
Used in place of a blood sample to test your monitor and ensure it is functioning properly. Control solution tests should be performed when you use a new monitor and every time you open a new package of test strips.
Lancet/Lancing Device
A tiny needle used to prick the skin and obtain a blood sample. New lancets should be used for each test – when reused, lancets become dull and dirty, causing more pain and potential infection.
Logbook
Utilize a logbook to keep track of your results.
