                        Advanced Insulation
ADVANCED INSULATION has reached a milestone with its fifth Queen’s Award, obtaining the Innovation award for the third time in five years.
The Gloucester-based company has been awarded a Queen’s Award for Innovation to celebrate the creation
and success of ContraFlame MS400, its lightweight insulation and fire protection product for the underdeck of an oil platform.
Despite the recent recovery, the need for cost savings in the oil and gas industry is well documented due to the faltering oil prices seen in recent years.
Philip Watson, topside sales director of Advanced Insulation, said:
“MS400, the subject of the award, is a lightweight Insulation and fire protection system that has provided significant weight savings on some of the recent mega oil and gas projects that have been built around the world.
“Many of these projects have a requirement
to insulate and fire-proof the exposed cellar decks of offshore platforms. The environmental conditions in the locations of these platforms can be extremely harsh.
“The MS400 System provides a more robust
solution that can deal with wave slam and wind loads to the cellar deck, coupled with providing suitable insulation for winter temperatures down to -44°C.”
Chris O’Leary, production manager at Advanced Insulation, added: “ContraFlame MS400 is formulated, designed and manufactured here
in Gloucester before being sent out to clients worldwide. When I started at the company in 2012, we were making 52 panels a year of around

3m2 each. That’s risen over the past few years to more than 9,000m2 per year.”
Andrew Bennion, managing director, added: “To reach the milestone of five Queen’s Awards is tangible recognition for the many members of Advanced Insulation who contributed to this achievement in their own individual way.
“Having worked our way up from a company of just 30 employees
in 2008 to more than 300 in 2018, I’m delighted that the company’s innovations continue to make an
impact worldwide as we diversify into new and exciting markets.”

Ancon Ltd
ANCON designs and manufactures structural fixings for the construction industry and has won a 2018 Queen’s Award for the successful introduction and ongoing development
of its advanced composite, low thermal conductivity, TEPLO wall tie range.
Ancon is a three-time Queen’s Award winner having previously received awards for International Trade in 2015 and Innovation in 2012.
TEPLO wall ties are manufactured from continuous basalt fibres set in a resin matrix; a fibre-reinforced polymer that is 70 times more thermally efficient than steel. When used to join the two leaves of a cavity wall, this material virtually eliminates cold bridging across the insulated cavity.
TEPLO has had a major influence on the growth of low energy housing in the UK and Ireland, and helped future-proof traditional masonry cavity wall construction techniques, by minimising insulation thickness and wall footprint. These innovative wall ties have been used in numerous ground-breaking developments, including the UK’s first zero-carbon retrofit and the largest building in the UK certified to the low energy ‘Passivhaus’ standard - the University of Leicester’s Centre for Medicine.
While Ancon’s first Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2012 recognised the company’s in-house development of a unique lockable concrete-connecting steel component, this second Innovation award has been won jointly with its external strategic partner in this advanced composite development, MagmaTech Ltd.
