Fairfax Saddles
While the basic principles of saddlery
design and manufacture have remained unchanged for decades, FAIRFAX SADDLES has gone beyond traditional craftmanship and developed an innovative range of equestrian tack. All the products in the range have properties that benefit both horse and rider and enhance performance due to their unique design. The Performance Girth was the first to be launched.
Fairfax Saddles Ltd has been making saddles in England for more than 30 years and in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics designer Vanessa Fairfax happened to be looking at the design of the girth – the strap that holds the saddle on a hose’s back.
She realised the design was actually restricting the horse’s movement and potentially hindering its performance, so she set about designing a completely different version.
Her work came to the attention of Team GBR
who asked her to delay the launch of the Fairfax Performance Girth until after the Games so the British Olympic Team could benefit. Her revolutionary girth was such a success; the equestrian press dubbed it “Team GBR’s secret weapon”.
Rupert Fairfax, Fairfax managing director, says: “To win a Queen’s Award for Enterprise based
Olympic dressage silver medallist Spencer Wilton opened the new Fairfax Saddles factory and thanked the people whose equipment helps keep his horses on winning form.
on the Performance Girth is a great honour for us. To our knowledge, we are the only saddlery manufacturer to ever be recognised in the innovation category.
“Our approach of using technology and science, combined with traditional craftsmanship, makes us unique in the UK saddlery trade, and I think the award reinforces this.”
Fairfax has now developed a whole range of
products, all independently tested under scientific conditions. Continued growth has seen a recent expansion into a new factory, opened by Olympic dressage silver medallist Spencer Wilton.

Firemac Limited
FIREMAC has grown to become one of the UK’s leading providers of passive fire protection products, designed to protect life and property in the event of a fire.

On receiving the award, Firemac managing director, Donald Mackay, said: “My wife Fiona, and I, started the business in 2002, based in our house, with just a phone and a computer. Since then the company has grown incredibly and now employs 23 staff, in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia. The development of our fire-resistant self-adhesive fabric has been a real collaboration between our technical and sales teams, our customers and our suppliers.
“The result is a fantastic product that our customers have adopted to
