The Wool Packaging Company Ltd – Woolcool®
WOOLCOOL is a highly innovative and amazingly effective insulated packaging system comprising of clean, 100% pure sheep’s wool sealed within a recyclable, food-grade wrap to create liners for recyclable delivery boxes for a whole range of industry sectors, primarily food and pharmaceutical.
Founder and CEO Angela Morris said: “We are delighted and proud to have achieved a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in recognition of the commitment and tenacity of the Woolcool team, and the support of suppliers and friends. On a wider platform this award reinforces the vital role that natural materials can play in meeting the environmental challenges that face the planet both now and, in the future.”
Making credible the incredible
The sustainability of the planet’s natural and renewable resources is a global issue that touches everyone in their daily lives.
“The world is crying out for genuinely sustainable alternatives to manmade packaging, so the Queen’s Award very much helps support the credibility of using a natural, superior and renewable packaging resource – sheep’s wool,” said Angela.

Created by nature, driven by science
The Woolcool concept is “created by nature, driven by science”. More than £1m has been invested in research and development – supported by three rounds of Government funding via Innovate UK.
“We’ve invested heavily in R&D and worked
with several UK universities to analyse how wool works at microscopic level, so we can provide clients with detailed scientific data to substantiate the product’s superior performance. Woolcool
is a natural product – but with real scientific substance behind it,” said Woolcool MD Josie Morris.
Reducing waste
“Woolcool also contributes to food waste reduction by keeping deliveries of chilled, ambient or frozen food products at the correct and safe temperature for at least 24 hours and in many cases, much longer,” said Josie.
Under the global spotlight of packaging waste scrutiny and as businesses come under pressure to meet increasingly stringent UK, EU and international packaging legislation, Woolcool’s reusable, recyclable and compostable products make a significant contribution towards waste reduction compliance and the circular economy.
Since 2009, when The Wool Packaging Company was founded, thousands of tonnes
of non-biodegradable plastic packaging waste have been saved from landfill by UK customers switching to Woolcool. In the last year alone, Woolcool has prevented the equivalent of 75 Olympic sized swimming pools full of polystyrene from going to landfill.
Helping save lives
Woolcool is expanding into the global pharmaceutical sector, working with Fortune 500 companies and high street pharmacies alike to provide sustainable, high performance insulated packaging solutions that reduce the vaccine and medicine wastage often caused by temperature control failings in conventional packaging.
“Woolcool has been independently verified to maintain temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, such as life-saving vaccines, within critical distribution temperature ranges for over 120 hours,” added Josie.
Family values
A new warehouse in Stone, Staffordshire was opened in 2015 and starting with just eight, the company now numbers 40 employees.
Strategic director, Keith Spilsbury, said: “We
are a family business with ambition to grow and develop in Staffordshire, bringing new jobs to the county. The Woolcool ethos means that we have a strong corporate culture of local collaboration and a community mentality.”
