Brother UK Ltd
Winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a huge achievement for any business, and is particularly special for Brother UK this year.
2018 marks our 50th year of operations. To receive the ultimate recognition for our sustainable development practices as we celebrate this milestone is fantastic news for the business. It tells us we’re doing things right, as we reflect on the past 50 years and plan ahead for the future.
This isn’t the first time we’ve won a Queen’s Award – but that’s not to say we’ve had a 100% success rate over the years, which makes winning this time even more meaningful.
We might not have been successful every time we’ve entered, but we see this as a real positive. It’s essential that the awards uphold the highest of

standards, encouraging businesses like ours to strive for excellence in order to win.
Entering for awards isn’t just a way to benchmark against other companies, but also a real opportunity to gather feedback as the basis for continued improvement within your own firm.
We’ve worked tirelessly to build on our commitment to sustainable development over the past five years. Everything we do is rooted in our ethos, built around ‘doing the right thing’.
Our fundamental purpose is to make the people and businesses we work with more successful, more quickly, which, in turn, has made our own business sustainable and adaptable.
As well as playing an active part in the community near our Tameside HQ, we’ve worked hard to achieve continuous annual reductions in fuel usage and send zero waste to landfill for eight years in a row.
We’re also one of the few organisations in the country to achieve the Investors in People platinum status, recognising the investment we make in our people and their potential.
I’m so proud to be leading this company at such a significant time, and for it to be recognised with this most prestigious award as we celebrate our 50th anniversary year.

DIVINE CHOCOLATE was established in 1998, the year after the farmers of the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative in Ghana voted to set up their own chocolate company. Today the company has reached £14m turnover and is based in
the UK and USA, with distribution around the world, including Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Japan, Turkey, and South Korea. Kuapa Kokoo has grown to over 85,000 members and produces around 1% of the world’s cocoa.
The co-op benefits from four income streams from Divine, and has been pioneering in its approach to empowering women, child labour awareness, as well as co-operative governance. It is the biggest shareholder of Divine Chocolate, owning 44% of the company.
Divine Chocolate is the only chocolate company in the world that is 100% Fairtrade and owned by cocoa
farmers. While Fairtrade
ensures farmers receive a better deal for their cocoa and additional income to invest in their community, company ownership gives farmers a share of Divine’s profits and a stronger voice in the cocoa industry.
As this prestigious award highlights, Divine Chocolate’s economic model, which empowers both those at the start and end of the supply chain, is commercially successful. Having set out with an objective to catalyse change in the chocolate industry, Divine Chocolate is showing other companies that doing business differently works. The win in the Sustainable Development category is particularly apt as next year (2019) heralds the company’s 20th anniversary!
All Divine Chocolate is free from palm oil, GMO ingredients, artificial flavourings, colourings and preservatives. A treat that is as rewarding as it
is delicious. All Divine’s ingredients are selected for their premium taste and quality, and are also
sourced from Fairtrade producers around the world. The chocolate is sweetened with sugar

from Kasinthula, a Fairtrade co-operative in Malawi and flavoured with creamy vanilla from Fairtrade farmers in Madagascar. As well as being a leading social enterprise company, in 2017 Divine Chocolate became a certified B Corp – demonstrating that the company meets a range of social and environmental business standards, as well as accountability and transparency, with a commitment to ongoing development and improvement in all these aspects of its business.
