Also known as ‘Fluence’ or ‘Radiant Exposure’. The ED is the amount of light energy found in the impact area on the tissue. It is found by measuring the energy (at the skin/tissue surface) and measuring the area of the spot, then dividing the energy by this area. See more here... PDF link
All lasers are ‘driven’ or ‘pumped’ by an energy source. High voltage electricity, radio waves, flashes of light, or another laser used to excite the laser medium.
Erythema is the medical term given to ‘reddening’ of the skin. This is a standard reaction of the skin to external stimulus. It indicates that the superficial blood vessels have expanded to increase the flow of nutrients and white cells to areas where injury or damage may have occurred.
An interlock where the failure of a single mechanical or electrical component of the interlock will cause the system to go into, or remain in, a safe mode.
A tube typically filled with krypton or xenon. Produces a high intensity, multi-wavelength light in short duration pulses.

The number of light waves passing a fixed point in a given unit of time, or the number of complete vibrations in that period of time. The frequency and wavelength are related by the simple equation: speed of light = frequency X wavelength.
A laser in which the active medium is a mixture of helium and neon. Its wavelength is usually in the visible range. Used widely for alignment, recording, printing and measuring.
Unit of frequency in the International System of Units (SI), abbreviated Hz; replaces ‘cps’ for cycles per second.
Invisible electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths which lie within the range of 0.76 to 1000 microns.
This also known as ‘Irradiance’ and is a measure of the light power falling on a surface per unit area – the power in a laser spot on the skin/tissue surface. It is measured in Watts/cm2. See more here...
