The wavelength of light determines the colour we see with the eye. Visible light has wavelengths in the range 400 to 700 nanometres, with red light at the top end of this range. Infra-red light is invisible but we feel it as heat. Ultra-violet light is also invisible and caused melanocytes to produce excess melanin – a process known as “tanning”. See more here...
A widely used solid-state crystal which is composed of yttrium and aluminium oxides which is doped with a small amount of rare-earth elements such as neodymium, erbium and holmium. Good to know for pub quizzes!
