Chapter 1 – Fundamentals of Medical/Aesthetic Lasers and IPLs v1.1
The Basic Physics of Lasers and IPLs
AIMS
Before you use a laser or an IPL you need to understand some fundamentals about the technology. This requires a little knowledge about the basic physics and some of the terms and expressions commonly used. If you can familiarise yourself with these terms you will have a decent grasp of the subject, plus you will be able to ask good questions, when required.
By the end of Section 1.1 you should have a better understanding of:
● Light
● Wavelength
● Monochromatic and broadband (IPL) light
● The electromagnetic spectrum
● Energy
● Energy Density (Fluence)
● Power
● Power Density
● Pulse Duration
● Spot Size
● Repetition Rate
● Pulse Trains
● Absorption
● Scattering (and back-scattering)
