● When multi-wavelength light hits any object, some of that light energy is absorbed by the atoms and molecules in that object. This usually causes them to heat up a little.
● Any light which is not absorbed is reflected back out of the object. This is the light we can see. The wavelengths (or colours) we observe are those wavelengths which the object did not absorb!
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
● Light is radiation and it forms a small part of the full electromagnetic spectrum.
● This spectrum includes other forms of radiation like X-rays, radio, gamma waves and a huge chunk of infra-red. Incidentally, we live in a ‘bath’ of radiation. It is all around us all the time.
