So, if you have an energy of 0.4 Joules in a 6 mm (0.6 cm) spot diameter, then the corresponding fluence is simply 0.4 * 3.6 (from the multiplying factor against ‘6’ mm), which is 1.42 J/cm2.
Or, if you have 0.8 Joules in a 4 mm spot, then the fluence is 0.8 * 8 = 6.4 J/cm2. Note: this only works when using ‘Joules’. 400 millijoules (mJ) is 0.4 Joules!
Understanding ‘Energy Density’ is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL when carrying out any laser/IPL-tissue treatments!!!
We cannot stress this enough. DO NOT proceed with treatments until you fully understand this parameter!
A wee technical note – ‘energy density’ or ‘fluence’ is known as ‘radiant exposure’ in physics!
The Importance of Calibration Charts
When we drive a car, we rely on the speedometer to tell us the speed accurately. But what if it wasn’t calibrated properly? What if it was ‘reading low’?
