Heated volume following light energy absorption
When light energy is absorbed by chromophores in the skin, heat is generated. But where is this heat generated?
Case 1 – No scattering
Let’s look at two particular cases – no scattering in the skin and ‘with’ scattering.
The image below shows a spot on the skin surface – this could be a laser pulse or an IPL shot. If we assume, in the first instance, a circular spot of radius ‘r’.

The light will penetrate into the skin to a certain depth – which depends on the wavelength and spot size.
