A5 - Why are laser/IPL hair removal treatments painful? And how do we minimise it?
We often hear about "pain-free" laser/IPL hair treatments. And we hear, often, that they are not!! Why are they painful in the first place? What causes this pain and where exactly is it located?
Here's a wee video I made to try to explain this...
 https://youtu.be/nDWcnZAF-6k
Knowing this makes it easier to control the amount of pain experienced by clients/patients. Since it mostly occurs in the upper dermis, just below the basal layer of the epidermis, we can reduce the pain sensation significantly by good surface cooling.
Our research shows that good cooling can make a huge difference. By reducing the temperature of the thermal pain receptors by 10 or 15 or 20 degrees Celsius, we can reduce the pain felt during treatments. It also means that we can use higher fluences, without inducing a more painful sensation!
And, as we all know, higher fluences leads directly to higher success rates... Hope this helps,
Mike.
