Chapter 2 – Fundamentals of Laser Tattoo Removal v1.0
In addition, laser tattoo removal often ‘removes’ or ‘bleaches’ hair. This is simply because the melanin absorbs some energy and is either vapourised or ‘transformed’ resulting in the hair disappearing.
However, this is a temporary issue. We noticed, back in the 1980s, that our ruby laser ‘removed’ hair in a wide number of patients. But we also knew that their hairs would always grow back within a few weeks/months since the follicles experienced no real damage...
Treating ‘new’ tattoos
A ‘new’ tattoo is defined as one that is less than three months old. Experience has shown that treating such tattoos is rarely successful. This is likely due to the fact that the skin is still very much in repair mode following the trauma of tattooing.
The ink particles have probably not been fully absorbed by macrophages and fibroblasts. Hence, the laser process will have little effect on them!
Our advice is to wait until at least three months following the tattooing process before considering a laser treatment.
One last thing...
Not all inks will react to your laser! That is just a fact. Some inks do not absorb any of the current laser wavelengths very strongly at all. This suggests we probably need a couple more wavelengths in our arsenal.
Who knows - they might come along one day...
