Chapter 3 – Fundamentals of Laser/IPL Hair Removal 2nd Edition
Figure 18 - The denaturation zone is the region when the temperature of the cells/tissues is above the ‘denaturation temperature threshold.
So, even a small increase in the cell temperature can increase the rate of denaturation rapidly. This merely requires an increase in the applied fluence at the skin surface.
Figure 19 shows us that higher temperatures result in exponentially faster denaturation rates. Hence, those cells require much less time to completely break down, compared with cells at lower temperatures.
What does all this mean? Well, it indicates that the temperature of the cells is critically important in achieving cell death. The temperature is directly, and linearly, dependent on the fluence.
As the temperature increases, the denaturation rate also increases – exponentially. This means that the whole process is much faster.
