                                                   Christmas Trade Cards

                                                                                          During the late 1800s, a favorite pastime for housewives was
                                                                                     collecting small, illustrated advertising cards that are now called
                                                                                     “trade cards.” Trade cards slowly evolved from cards used by
                                                                                     tradesmen around 1800 to advertise their services. But it was
                                                                                     not until the spread of color lithography, first demonstrated at
                                                                                     the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, that trade cards
                                                                                     became plentiful.
                                                                                        During the 1880s, trade cards became a major way of
                                                                                  advertising America’s products and services. Local stores became
                                                                                  the primary means of distributing trade cards, so many trade cards
                                                                                  advertise both a product and the store where a housewife might
                                                                                  purchase the product.
                                                                                       While many different products used trade cards for
                                                                                  advertising, some of the product categories that relied heavily on
                                                                                  trade cards were medicine,
                                                                                  clothing, household, tobacco,
                                                                                  sewing, stoves, farm, and food.
