We use quotation marks to enclose direct quotation a person’s exact words. A direct quotation generally begins with a capital letter.
Example:
“In that house is a wicked witch, who flew at me and scratched my face with her long nails.”
When an expression identifying the speaker interrupts a quoted sentence the second part of the quotation begins with a lowercase letter.
Example:
“Ah, yes,” said the donkey; “if we could only get inside.”
A direct quotation can be set off from the rest of the sentence by one or more
commas or by a question mark or an exclamation point, but not by a period.
Example:
“Why are you panting, my friend?” asked the donkey.
A comma or a period should be placed inside the closing quotation marks.
Example:
“We shall soon be warm now,” said Fin-fin.
A quotation mark or an exclamation point should be placed inside the closing quotation marks when the quotation itself is a question or an exclamation. Otherwise, it should be placed outside.
Example:
“What’s the matter with you, old Tom?” asked the donkey.
