• It’s about half the size of the Pacific Ocean and covers roughly 20% of the world’s surface.
• The longest mountain range of Earth is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is under the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches from Antarctica to Iceland.
• Its name comes from Atlas from Greek Mythology. He was the Titan of astronomy and navigation.
• The Bermuda Triangle, home to many myths and legends, is in the Atlantic Ocean.
• In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly alone through the Atlantic Ocean.
The Indian Ocean:
• The third largest ocean on Earth, the Indian Ocean covers around 14% of the planet’s surface.
• The Coelacanth, a fish that was thought to be extinct for many years, was found alive and swimming in the warm waters near Madagascar.
• The Northern Indian Ocean is the most important transport route for oil. Every day, millions of barrels of crude oil cross from the Middle East to Asia.
• The Indian Ocean is the largest breeding ground for humpback whales in the world.
The Artic Ocean:
• It’s located around the North Pole.
• Many polar bears live on the Arctic ice.
• Tragically, the Artic Ocean’s ice covers shrink by 8% every ten years.
• The Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, which can grow up to 2.4 meters, or 8 feet long, lives in the Artic Ocean’s waters. It eats plankton and fish.
