In the 13th century B.C., it was conquered by the Philistines, almost destroyed by the Hasmonean Kingdom, and attacked by both Napoleon and Alexander the Great. The last one killed all of Gaza’s male population and sold most women and children to slavery.
Then, in 1517, Gaza was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. They had been the ones whose conquest has lasted the longest, since they stayed there for four centuries, up until the Ottoman Empire dissolved after the First World War.
After World War II, a huge amount of Jewish people arrived at Palestine. In 1947, The United Nations divided the previously land into Jewish and Arab states, but the Arabs did not accept this division of their country and, sadly, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War began.
In 1967, Israel reoccupied Gaza after a 6-day war against the Arab States. The Israeli military controlled both, the West Bank and Gaza, for almost 30 years. During this time, the Palestinians of the region struggled for their independence, constantly fighting with the Jewish settlers in their Palestinian territories.
In 1987, the first “intifada” (organized Palestinian uprising) against the Israeli rule began by a refugee camp in northern Gaza. News of this quickly spread, and many Palestinians from around the region joined the fight.
During the revolt, which created a lot of attention from the rest of the world, the Hamas, a political party, was created as a Palestinian addition to the large Muslim Brotherhood Organization that was very popular throughout Egypt and almost the entire Arab world. Hamas became very popular by creating social and educational programs for the excluded Palestinians, but it was disapproved of by many other
countries because of its planned rebellion against Israel, which would harm many innocent people. These plans created a lot of tension with the 1993 Oslo Accords, which had been made between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization, which gave up control of parts of Gaza and the West Bank to the Palestinian Authority in exchange for a peace agreement.
