Wedderburn Clyde Trailblazer
2 Days/1 Night September - May
Ex Clyde or Queenstown
Availability: Year-round Duration: 2 Days Distance: 78km Description
This cycle adventure is one of our most popular two-day options. Our shuttle will transport you from Clyde to the highest point of the famous Central Otago Rail Trail at Wedderburn. For the next two days the ride is mostly downhill, back to Clyde. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. There are also a number of old historic hotels to visit along the way. Accommodation is in a twin/double share room.
This package starts at 9.00am at our depot in Clyde where you will be fitted with your cycles, briefed on your tour and then transported to Wedderburn. From Wedderburn the first town is Oturehua and across the road from the old Gilchrist’s Store is the Oturehua Tavern - this is a great place for morning tea or lunch. Other places of interest are the historic Hayes Engineering Workshop, and the remains of the Golden Progress Mine just north of thetrail. The next section is one of the most spectacular; the Poolburn Gorge. This features two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky gorge. Once past the gorge, the trail passes through the township of Lauder and then on to Omakau to your accommodation.
Today’s ride brings you from Omakau through to Clyde. Along the way you will pass through Chatto Creek and the tavern is a great place to stop for morning tea. The trail then follows the Manuherikia River to Alexandra. Here you may continue along the Rail Trail to our office in Clyde or, alternatively, cycle through Alexandra, over the Clutha River / Mata Au, and take the scenic, River Track, back through Clyde township to the depot - this is approximately 8kms longer.
