Suddenly, a cheer began to build that got louder and louder. People cheered, laughed, cried, jumped, waved their hands in the air, shook each other’s hands, patted each other on the back and shoulder, and embraced each other. The joyous celebration lasted for several minutes.
When the crowd got quiet, Nixon continued to read to the constant interruptions of cheers and shouts of “HUZZAH!” By the time he finished, the noise had become deafening. The bell in the State House started to ring, followed by church bells all over the city. The triumphant celebration spread all across the city and lasted into the night.
