a private celebration. After a few toasts, the rest of their time was spent relaxing and enjoying each other’s company and Franklin’s good food. This was the first time they had ever been together when congressional business or the war were not discussed.
“Mr. Jefferson,” Ike asked while trying to catch his breath, “do you have time for me to r-r-r-read tonight?”
“Yes, I do, Ike. In fact, you can stay as long as you think your parents will allow. There is nothing I would rather do tonight than listen to you read.”
Jefferson thought, “It would be the perfect ending to one of the most extraordinary days I have ever experienced.”
