Tarleton managed to capture a small number of legislators, but did not harm Monticello. Later, charges were made against Jefferson by the Virginia General Assembly that he had mishandled his duties and abandoned his post. The charges were ultimately dropped, but Jefferson insisted on appearing before the lawmakers to explain his actions.
