My Dear Thomas,
The members of the Constitution Committee have asked
me to express our appreciation for the two drafts of a Virginia constitution you provided. While the main body of the constitution has been finalized, you will be pleased to know that the preamble came from your pen. I wish you had been able to serve on our committee.
On a personal note, correspondence I have received from Richard Henry Lee informs me that you are drafting a declaration of independence if the Virginia Resolution were to be adopted. Congress could not have selected a more capable writer.
Please express my appreciation to Professor & Mrs. MacAdam for delivering this letter to you. As I am sure you have learned, Mrs. MacAdam is a remarkable woman and a devout patriot.
I remain your faithful servant, George Mason
“Good,” Jefferson thought. “I am pleased some of my suggestions have been useful.”
