Jefferson asked Paine about his suggestions. They continued to talk for several hours about the declaration and their dreams for America.
While Jefferson respected Paine’s opinion, he decided not to include his suggestions. He was satisfied with the declaration and was ready to show it to John Adams.
“‘The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.’” Jefferson remembered that sentence from Paine’s Common Sense. “I wonder if what we are working to accomplish is ‘the cause of all mankind’?”
Jefferson began to prepare himself for bed.
