August 2, 1776 -
The Declaration was Signed
The Declaration was signed on August 2, 1776, by the 56 congressmen who had enacted the resolution that liberated the colonies, and approved the document that created the United States of America.
“At President John Hancock’s direction, Secretary Thomson stood and began to call the roll. The delegates from the New England colonies were the first to be called – New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. . . .”
When called, each man walked to President Hancock’s desk and signed his name to America’s birth certificate.
“The Declaration of Independence was now official. America was now embarked on the road to freedom. The first step had been completed – independence had been declared. The second and final step was to win a military victory over the superior British forces. Then, and only then, would America be able to establish an independent government for the United States of America.”
