Victorious Continental Army Disbanded

 • FEBRUARY 3 - INTERNATIONAL ACTION: Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Russia formally recognized the United States of America as an independent country.
• FEBRUARY 4 - BRITISH ACTION: The British government officially declared an end to hostilities in America.
• APRIL 11 - AMERICAN ACTION: Congress officially declared an end to the Revolutionary War.
• APRIL 15 - AMERICAN ACTION: Congress ratified the preliminary peace treaty with Great Britain.
• JUNE 13 - AMERICAN ACTION: The main body of the Continental Army was disbanded.
• SEPTEMBER 3 - AMERICAN & BRITISH ACTION: The Treaty of Paris was signed by representative of the United States and Great Britain.
• NOVEMBER 2 - AMERICAN ACTION: George Washington delivered his farewell address to his military officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York City.
• NOVEMBER 3 - AMERICAN ACTION: The remaining American troops were discharged.
• NOVEMBER 25 - AMERICAN ACTION: Three months after the peace treaty had been signed, the last British soldiers departed New York for England.
General Washington and the Continental Army triumphantly entered New York City on November 25, seven years after the British army established martial law. They entered the city as the last Redcoats were boarding ships for England.
Farewell to the Army
General Washington delivered his farewell orders to the Continental Army on November 2. He declared his officers and men to be “one patriotic band of Brothers” for their valiant and noble sacrifices, conduct and victorious efforts during the war for independence.
