To be truly “poor in spirit” is a state of mental advancement in which one’s mind is so inwardly ful lled with wisdom that it has spontaneously and totally transcended the objects of the world. It is a state of psychic detachment due to a higher level of mental integration. If the mind is profoundly satis ed, ful lled, strong, and healthy, it is not attached to the objects, nor does it crave for certain external conditions with the feeling that happiness depends upon them.
Consider life a form of pilgrimage. During pilgrimage it is most important never to carry a big burden. If you carry boxes of overcoats, food, and books, as well as your radio and TV, then the pilgrimage will be painful. You will feel like a donkey bearing a huge load on a mountainous slope. Obviously, the less you carry, the better you are.
Similarly, in this world, if your mind carries burdens of attachment, hatred, anger, greed, and passion, you cannot enjoy the glorious experiences and sights that are there as you journey through life. There are wondrous things that one can learn and observe. However, how can a human being enjoy the greater things of life when all their time and energy is involved in carrying a meaningless burden of impure sentiments?
