Karma and Compassion
If people are cruel to you, you must well understand that the cruelty is not entirely from an outer source—it is from the workings of karmic law. Once upon a time, you were cruel to others. Now it returns to you through sources that seem to be completely external.
If you are eager to nd fault in others, you must understand that the Divine plan will nd fault in you with similar eagerness. That is the way you are creating your karmic process. If you are eager to call others bad names such as “donkey” or “monkey,” you should not be surprised when nature places you in a circumstance where you are rudely treated.
You must understand others just as eagerly as you would like to be understood, because it is by doing so that you prepare the karma of being understood. The world is a re ection of what you are. The way you act with people determines the way that the karmic reaction will unfold. If you promote understanding, you will be understood. If you promote misunderstanding, you will be misunderstood.
Spiritual virtues have a special magical quality. When you develop them within your personality, similar characteristics proceed from others and are directed towards you. If you are compassionate towards others, you will receive compassion from an external source in a time of need. If you do not have
