attainment of Self-realization, though calling it by different names; and each recognizes the importance of puri cation on the path of spirituality.
The mind, like a mirror, re ects your own ever-present Divine Consciousness. However, impurities, agitations, and obstructions prevent that mirror of mind from revealing your Consciousness in all its perfection. Sadhana (the course of spiritual discipline chosen by an aspirant) is the mystical cleansing process that removes the impurities and obstructions and allows you to see the Self clearly re ected.
To better understand this role of sadhana, imagine that you are trying to see your face in a handheld mirror. If dust and dirt has gathered on the mirror, your face will appear distorted. Therefore, the pollutants of the mirror need to be removed. The dirt is like the gross contamination that colors the mind—anger, hated, greed, jealousy, pride, and similar defects. These gross impurities, referred to as malas in Yogic terminology, are washed away by Karma Yoga—consistently converting your actions into sel ess service by considering yourself an instrument in Divine Hands.
Another obstacle to seeing your face in the mirror would result from an unsteady hand. If your hand is trembling with agitation, the image will also be distorted. These tremors are like the perpetual
