The Backyard of Shanghai
In 1577 during the Ming Dynasty, a retired Shanghainese governor resumed his ambitious project of building a grand Suzhou style Chinese Garden that started almost 20 years ago. The 5 acres garden sits beside the City God Temple inside the Old City of Shanghai and is one of the representatives of Kiang-nan garden culture. The "Garden of Happiness" has numerous featured rocks, architectures, ponds, and bridges. Though it has been damaged in centuries of wars, today, the garden is mostly recovered and declared a national monument. As a must-visit spot in Shanghai, you can try out the world-famous soap dumplings in the nearby Nanxiang Bun Shop, or traditional Shanghai cuisine in the Green Wave Aisle Restaurant.
