to the old shikumen. This highly controversial revitalization scheme required moving out old habitant, while managed to preserve many valuable historical heritages, such as the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the Former Site of Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai.
In fact, an authentic shikumen never appeared as the polished Xintiandi. Many crumbled houses were removed on the site, while those preserved had one or two outer walls replaced, and the interior being gut-renovated. The Xintiandi project certainly provides a popular systematic way for tourists enjoying their days decently, drinking a cup of coffee, buying luxurious products or some dedicated souvenirs, in an environment surrounded by classic architectures. But for those experienced travellers who want to fuse into any of the local atmospheres, we recommend you to also take a walk wandering around those surviving shikumen with locals living inside. Maybe you can discover several stores that do have the traditional "Longtang" culture of Shanghai.
