Get to Know Shanghai
Shanghai is one of the four municipalities under the direct administration of the Chinese Central Government and most populous urban area in China and second in the world, with a population of over twenty-four million people. This city, located directly at the estuary of the Yangtze River into the East Sea of China, has a rich history, having been under international settlement before the privileges being surrendered by the Allies.
Shanghai has a long developing history since the Jin Dynasty, as a regional commercial port. In 1845, the first British Settlement was established in the Bund, beginning the history of Shanghai International settlement. Along the turbulent century of China, the presence of foreign powers ironically brought law and order within the two continuously expanding
settlements(International and French). This high level of stability provided the chance for Shanghai to become the most important trade port in Fat East, and the largest commercial and financial centre in entire Asia entering 1930s. The once prosperous city built by the Shanghailanders laid the foundation for Shanghai to become a metropolitan when the moment arrives.
