If you’ve been on any of the Internet Aussie lists over the last few months, you’ve probably read a lot about proposed mandatory spay/neuter legislation (ms/n). Like most, I’m opposed to it—but unlike most, only mar- ginally. I firmly believe that a univeral cultural climate that supports spay/neuter of pets is key to solving the companion animal overpopulation problem. I just don’t think mandating it is the best way to go. (And I have to say I find it ironic that people who include spay/neuter clauses in contracts on every pet puppy they sell will fight tooth and nail if their local government wants to do the same thing!)
At any rate, I’m always on the lookout for unintended consequences in situations like these, and this one does indeed seem ripe with potential. In this economy, I’m afraid the cost of the procedure(s) would cause some owners to dump their dogs rather pay up or risk fines... and others who might consider adopting a dog made homeless by foreclosure or other domestic disaster may think twice because of the added expense.
I also think it’s unfair to ask breeders to decide at the tender age of six months (frequently mentioned in ms/n as an appropriate age) whether to keep a dog intact. Ch. Paradigm’s Bayouland on Broadway “Cash”
Broadway Kennels would like to thank longtime friends Nora Porobic and Jane Firebaugh (Paradigm) and Yvette LeBlanc (Bayouland).
Cash came from the golden cross that has produced numerous Best in Show Champions, AKC/ASCA Ch. Broadway’s Blaze Of Glory RE OA OAJ ROM-C III with AKC Ch. Lil’ Creek’s Hug Me Tight ROM-C III
I would like to thank Nora, Jane, and Yvette for the opportunity to share in the life of this magnificent dog. Cash has proven to be a once-in-a-lifetime companion and the epitome of the Australian Shepherd. Cash has not only excelled in the breed ring, taking many Best of Breeds and Group Placements, but he has also passed on his sound conformation, wonderful temperament, and keen intelligence to his offspring. We can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next! We are currently working on our goal of breaking into the Top 10, and we have every belief that he will do this in grand style.
Broadway would like to thank everyone who has encouraged Cash and me in the breed ring this past year. A big thanks to the judges who have admired him and to all of my friends, family, and Juniors who have helped me this year. Your unending support of Cash and Broadway Kennels is very much appreciated!
Broadway Kennels would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Great New Year!
